Just about every western New Yorker knows the story of the headless ghost that stalks the halls of Old Fort Niagara’s French Castle. The legend was first published in the 1830s and survives today with numerous embellishments.
On Friday and Saturday nights in October, visitors will have the opportunity to hear that story, and many other accounts of ghostly sightings and unexplained phenomena that have occurred at the nearly 300-year-old historic site.
Tickets are now available for Lantern and Lore Tours, nocturnal tours of the fort by lantern light. As visitors navigate the darkened halls of the Old Fort’s historic buildings, tour guides tell stories from the distant past as well as more recent accounts of ghostly sightings and bumps in the night. Tours depart from the historic site’s Visitor Center every half hour beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Proceeds from the special lantern tours will benefit the Old Fort Niagara Association’s programs of historic preservation and public education. Advanced tickets are required and can be purchased via the Lantern and Lore Tours event pages on Old Fort Niagara’s website.
